A bittersweet ending has three elements, the first of which comes from the conflict in the story: But what exactly makes a bittersweet ending? Let’s take a look at its components and see how the parts work together. The more I read, the more I found that bittersweet endings show up all throughout history and in many of the best stories we have. It’s actually a key element of the myths and fables that he drew from when creating his world. But, as I was delighted to find, this isn’t unique to Tolkien’s writing. The movies do a pretty good job of capturing this feeling, and I think that’s why fans of the books enjoy the films so much. I didn’t know what to do except pick up the first book again to see if it would evoke the same feeling a second time through. That was, to be fair, the first time a conclusion made me so perfectly sad and happy at the same time. Having grown up reading The Lord of the Rings over and over I will admit that I am biased when I say that my favorite bittersweet ending is in The Return of the King. I think that the components of narrative necessarily work best when the resolution to the story is a bittersweet ending. While it should be no surprise that such beloved stories have something in common, I believe that it actually couldn’t be otherwise. Les Miserables and War and Peace leave the reader drifting in emotional limbo for days afterwards, but so does Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia. This applies to more than just monuments of classical literature. It’s not a specific type of plot or a certain set of characters what sets these excellent stories apart is their mastery of the bittersweet ending. The best stories share a unique characteristic.

He died in 1973 at the age of 92.īlack Elk receives his great vision in the Black Hills, which the Lakota view as sacred. Over the course of his career, Neihardt taught at the University of Nebraska and the University of Missouri. Black Elk Speaks, which is derived from these conversations, was published in 1932. Black Elk and Neihardt engaged in a series of conversations about Black Elk’s life and involvement in the movement, and they developed a deep, meaningful connection. Neihardt’s relationship with Black Elk began in 1930, when he wanted to speak with a holy man who had firsthand experience with the Ghost Dance movement in order to complete Song of the Messiah (1935), the final installment of A Cycle of the West. He worked as an editor and critic for the Minneapolis Journal, the Kansas City Journal-Post, The New York Times, and the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch. One of Neihardt’s most well-known works is A Cycle of the West (1949), a book of five epic poems written over 30 years that traces the history of western settlement and the displacement of American Indians. In 1921, Neihardt was named Poet Laureate of Nebraska. In 1908, Neihardt married Mona Martinsen, a sculptor who studied with Rodin in Paris, and they had three children together: Enid, Hilda, and Sigurd. He became acquainted with many Omaha Indians during this time and wrote several short stories inspired by these friendships, publishing them in magazines like Overland, Outing, and the American. As a young man, Neihardt worked for an Indian trader in Bancroft, Nebraska, a town outside the Omaha Reservation, which spurned his fascination with American Indian culture. His first published work was the Divine Enchantment (1900), a long poem which expanded on his Protestant upbringing to explore a more universal take on spiritual experience. He enrolled in the Nebraska Normal College in Wayne, Nebraska in 1893, where he supported himself by working as a bell-ringer, ringing a bell to notify teachers and students when it was time to change classes. 182,000 is also just a fraction of the files on my PC - to get the effects of a full scan, I’d have to run the Deep Scan multiple times. This may be due to the scan’s intensive nature, but it’s still a long time to wait. When scanning an area like the C: drive (the area of the hard disk that contains the operating system and system files), it took around 18 minutes to check 182,000 files - this is considerably slower than Norton 360, which takes about 12 minutes to scan almost 800,000 files. Zemana’s Deep Scan option is more thorough, focusing exclusively on the areas you want to check for malware. This isn’t something I’ve seen in other antivirus packages I like that Zemana makes it obvious when malware is flagged, although I’d like to receive pop-up notifications too. I only knew about the issue when I went back into the Zemana app and noticed the stark color change. I didn’t get a notification of the malicious file, even though I had pop-ups switched on. Zemana found a malicious test item straight away, and the app interface changed from blue to red, alerting me to the danger. Zemana’s Smart Scan detected a malicious object almost immediately This speed is on the same level as services like Norton 360, which scans 11,400 items in 2 minutes. The Smart scan was very fast, taking less than 15 seconds to scan just over 2,400 items. Deep Scan - A more intensive scan that focuses on the areas of your PC you want to check for malware.Smart Scan - This is a quick scan option that focuses on the areas of your PC most used and likely to be attacked by malware.Overall, Zemana was able to detect 100% of malware on the test PC and 98% of threats on Android. Zemana’s malware detection and removal rates are top quality. Virus Scan - Thorough but Lacking a Full Scan Option I suggest using Zemana as an extra layer of anti-malware protection rather than as your sole security option - I was pleased to find it worked well alongside other antivirus plans and didn’t conflict with other software. Zemana offers real-time protection against new and known malware but no other extra features - there is no dedicated web protection, firewall, or tools like a password manager. Try Zemana risk-free for 30 days! In a Rush? Here’s a 1-Minute Summary Better still, it’s risk-free to try Zemana for yourself with the 30-day money-back guarantee. That being said, Zemana is effective at blocking newly-released and complex malware. It’s far better to invest in an antivirus plan that will give you complete coverage rather than protect you from a narrow portion of threats. It lacks the features needed to truly protect my devices, like a safe browser, WiFi security, VPN, firewall or password manager. However, Zemana’s AntiMalware is simply a tool designed to detect and remove new and known malware threats - and nothing else. I hoped that Zemana would offer me the same comprehensive coverage that top-tier antiviruses like Norton 360 and Total AV provide. I was impressed with its ability to detect malware test files that I’d hidden on my Windows PC but quickly discovered that it’s extremely limited in terms of functionality. Zemana’s AntiMalware package is a great piece of software that finds and eliminates malware lurking on your PC and Android devices.
